Off-Road News and Events in the Rocky Mountain Region

Caprock-08Caprock Canyon Enduro (March 30, 2008) - A full house of over 400 racers made the trek to Quitaque, Texas for the annual Caprock Canyon Enduro where they were greeted with unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid 80’s and no moisture in site. With 77 ground miles to cover, most of it in the first three gears, it was going to be a tough day on the ranch. The club began the event with a special test right out of the gate, a timed trip around the Grand Prix course used the previous day, and they would end the day there also, just in reverse direction. Following that the riders enjoyed a nice cool down as they traveled the county roads to the first section of singletrack, then the race was on.  With little in the way of transfer trail, the riders were on the gas as they negotiated the tight turns through the Juniper bush up, down or sideways on every hillside in sight. The 18 mile long A/B special test was particularly challenging as later riders found the challenging trail to have many silt filled ruts up the sharp climbs, leaving little room for error, and with the sun at it’s zenith, it was here where many an out of shape rider melted down and went into “survival” mode. Jack Rabbit Enduro (9-19-2007) The RMEC welcomed a new event to the schedule this year, the Jack Rabbit Qualifier, conveniently located, just an hour east of Denver in Bennett, Colorado. Utilizing the short course “restart” format first pioneered at the Milliken event a few years back, racers were treated to an approximately seven mile course, combining grass track and tree sections professionally timed by the full lap with breaks between laps to refill and recharge. A and B riders raced 5 laps while C riders went four. Other niceties included various vendors on-site, the most welcome of which was the hardy Hot Dog man who stuck it out through the surprise afternoon storm to keep those hungry racers fed and the photographer from mammothmoments.com, where racers can find their pictures posted and available for purchase. Bernie FrederickTerry Peak Enduro - (8-19-2007) "This is an old school style course, the way they used to be" stated event promoter Mart Geary at the riders meeting. "Terrain will be mostly singletrack up, down, sideways and through the trees of the ski slopes (virgin terrain)" understated the event flyer. Well, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that if Mart says it's tough it's tough! And so went the Terry Peak Enduro, a twenty mile loop consisting of about 90% virgin singletrack, with an extra "tough" section thrown in just to keep the "A" riders entertained. Story

Riders at the Start of the 2007 Snow Shoe EnduroSnow Shoe Fits Blythe! (8-12-2007) - While a vast swath of the West and Colorado in particular, remain under assault by the forces that restrict the use of public lands for motorized use, one club in Colorado, the Book Cliff Rattlers M/C has bucked the trend of short courses on private land, promoting the only genuine forest enduro in the state. Not only do they stand out among their fellow race promoting peers, their great relationship with the local land use officials gave them the opportunity to move this year’s event to a new, “never been raced on before”, trail system in the Southern Uncompahgre National Forest.
