Bernie Frederick Squeeked Out a Narrow Victory at Sydney!
Bernie Frederick Squeeked Out A Narrow Victory at Sydney!

Bernie Frederick and his YZF450 squeaked out a close overall victory at Round 5 of the RMEC Championship series held in Sydney Nebraska, just 15 seconds separating him from the Vickery Motorsports, Topar Racing, Durelle Suspension and offroadchampions.com backed YZ250F of Ian Blythe. Blythe for the second event in a row suffered from bike problems, this time running out of gas in one of the tests. Fortunately for him it occurred nearly in front of his pit, so he was able to get going quickly, but with a mere 15 second difference between himself and Frederick, it surely cost him the overall today

Blythe was Bookin'!

That is to take nothing away from the Colorado Powersports, Rekluse, FMF, Moose and Racetech backed Frederick. Frederick had his Yamaha lit up around the 13 mile loop, which consisted of a mixture of MX track, plains/desert type terrain and a tight Cottonwoods tree section that will have you ducking the whole way through, noting that “the YZ450 ran well and suited this course perfectly today”. Frederick also wanted to apologize to the Honda rider he inadvertently ran in to during the second test.

Cody Schafer rounded out the podium putting his KX450F into third overall today, just a point back. “I was lucky to get the flip on test one on the third lap and it proved to be the difference” Frederick noted while discussing the closeness of the scores. And surely it made the difference, because without the flip, Frederick would have dropped to third, losing out on tie-breakers to the rapidly improving Schafer. Mark McDonough motored his YZ250 to fourth overall, four points behind Schafer, but narrowly edging the KTM of Brian Fortman on tie-breakers. Jim Koch took topped the Vets, finishing just a point behind for sixth overall, while Rob Weiher continued his dominance of the Seniors, motoring in his Apex sports backed YZ250 to seventh overall. Forest Smith also continued his string of strong finishes, topping Jeremy Henley for the Open A win with the riders placing eighth and ninth overall respectively.

Kyle Schafer once again topped the B’s, piloting his YZ125 to a 69 point score, which would have put him at 13th overall in the A’s! Second overall B finisher was Dan Buchheit taking his KTM to the Open victory, five points back of Schafer. Trace Armstrong rounded out the B podium, enroute to topping the 4-Stroke class. Jary Penny and Kenny Perkins continued their season long duel for the Super Senior class honors, Penney coming out on top this time, beating Perkins by 26 seconds.

4-stroke class pilot Lee Smith topped all comers in the C classes, dropping 55 points on his Yamaha. Skyler Price took his Suzuki to second overall while conquering the Open class handily, while Andy Coleman motored his Honda in for third overall. The youngsters of the 60+ class dominated today, with Greg Labbe and his KTM taking a single point win over fellow KTM rider, Floyd Stretch. With a thirty point gap back to third, the 70 plus year old Marv Donaldson was crying foul. “when are they going to put a 70+ class in for us?” noted Donaldson after the race in defense of himself and fellow 70 year old Ed Kistler who finished fourth on the day, “we just can’t keep up with those young guys!”
