After seven straight weeks of winter storms and frigid temperatures, the weather in Colorado finally took a turn, greeting today’s ice racers with mild and comfortable temperatures. While the conditions were outstanding for spectators, the racers were challenged with deteriorating conditions as the track steadily melted down through the day, forming wet and mushy conditions that may have favored a Jet Ski by late afternoon!
This made a good start a huge advantage, as the immense water spray left many a rider soggy and soaked. While complaints from the riders were few, many of the bikes took offense to the conditions as they popped and misfired around the circuit.

Bodie Packham (20) dogs Bob Spann (85), Enroute to 301+B Win!
As one of the earlier afternoon races, the spray didn’t play a role in the 301+B Class, where Bodie Packham recovered from a poor start to nab the win on his RMZ450.
Jay Struss catapulted into the lead out of the gate, rounding turn two with a solid three bike-length lead, but it only took till the end of the lap before CRF450R mounted Bob Spann closed the gap and began to pressure Struss. With the jiving and chucking going on ahead of him, Packham dropped his head and began to reel off smooth, mistake free laps that would bring first him past Spann, then two laps later past Struss for the win. Struss would finish a close second, while Spann held on for third.
Tom Flint (49) would lead early before before falling(literally) back to third!
While the mushy conditions were causing havoc in the Studded Tire classes, the Bare Tire guys were eating it up, digging in and riding in an aggressive, rear wheel sideways dirt track style. In no class was this more evident than the Bare Tire A’s where Honda mounted Teague Sawyer managed to both grab the holeshot and come from behind to take the win. It was just a little too much momentum into turn one that allowed Tom Flint, Adam Vlasicak and Davey Durelle respectively, underneath the CRF450X mounted Sawyer, quickly turning a holeshot into a mid-pack slush shower. Vlasicak was having nothing-doing with second place however, and making a move from the inside, initiated contact with Flint. The battle wouldn’t last long though, as Vlasicak’s ’76 YZ would apparently succumb to the wet conditions, leaving him stranded trackside. By this time Sawyer managed his way back around Durelle and set his sights on Flint, who shortly thereafter, succumbing to the pressure, laid it down in turn three, handing the win to Sawyer. Glued to Sawyers’ rear wheel, Durelle crossed the line in second, while Flint quickly recovered from his crash to hold onto third.

Keifer Jacobson (48) overtakes Robby Burch (89) for the Studded Novice Win!
In one of the final, and wettest, races of the day, Keifer Jacobson topped the Novice Studded class in only his second race on studs. The start was dominated by the heavy hitting horsepower of CR500 mounted Robby Burch. Jacobson was able to quickly move inside of Burch, jamming the more agile RM250 under him in turn two. Burch’s response had him hot into turn three, losing the rear into a slide before stalling as he made the save. This allowed Reena Manka into the second position, where initially she began to pressure Jacobson. The clear track ahead seemed to motivate Jacobson as he seemingly found another gear, pulling away from Manka each lap, finally gapping her by five bike lengths for the victory.

Ryan Kilday (22) Romped to the Amatuer Quad Win, Wes Asmus (98)
and
Adam Kimler
(16) were close early.
Ryan Kilday schooled the Amateur Quads, breaking away with the holeshot and fending off the early advances of Dannan Wagner, before disappearing off into the ice mist for the win. Wagner was in contention early, but a spin out in turn one would allow Kilday to break away unchallenged. Adam Kimler, who had been maintaining a distant third, was the beneficiary, inheriting second and keeping Chris Riggs, who could never quite get close enough to challenge, at bay in third.

Craig Anderson (12) topped Mel Kruse (1) for the 4x4 Win!
