Roamers Defeat Bronco's for a Great Day of Racing!
Round three of the Harry’s Roamers MC promoted Colorado State Championship Ice Racing series featured the usual fierce competition on the track, but additional competition came from an unlikely source: the gridiron. On this day, the Denver Bronco’s did battle in a fierce competition of their own against the Pittsburgh Stealers for the AFC Championship at Invesco Field. The question on hand was how this would affect the outcome of today’s racing. How many racers would forego a day on the ice for the comforts of a warm couch, adult beverages, and the excitement of the most important football game in Denver since 1999? It turns out, not many. The 224 entries today were less than 10% behind rounds one and two in attendance, and the racing didn't’t suffer a bit.
The 0-300 Studded Pro class featured some of the fastest riding of the day as current points leader Jeff Steinberger jumped out to the early lead in defense of his perfect win streak coming into today. Suzuki RM250 mounted Davey Durelle was to have none of it though as he stuffed his way past Steinberger at the conclusion of lap one to take the lead. Steinberger was not giving up though, continuing to pressure Durelle and show him a wheel into every corner. Unfazed, Durelle squeezed the inside line, not allowing Steinberger any opportunity. Forced to the outside, Steinberger could not generate the momentum necessary to get around and had to settle for second, just a wheel length behind. Steve Brown motored his CR250R into third with Aaron Kennedy close behind for fourth.
Sean Nesshoefer jumped out to the early lead of the 301+ Studded A class, setting a quick pace that was hard for the pack to match. Through the first lap, Dave Stock, running in second, was doing his best to keep pressure on Nesshoefer but had his hands full thwarting the advances of CR250 mounted Joey Malloy. Malloy, who was sporting a Bronco’s jersey in support of his team, pushed the envelope just a little too far losing traction and low siding his way out of contention for the day on the second lap. This caused the riders behind to take evasive measures to avoid the sliding Malloy and his machine and allowed Nesshoefer and Stock a comfortable cushion over the field where they finished first and second respectively. Duane Williams navigated the carnage most successfully and held off Kenny Perkins for the final podium position.
After suffering a spectacular swap and spill in the qualifier, David Doubleday came back to dominate the 301+ Studded B class on his YZ490. Riding with an apparently blown rear shock, Doubleday was unfazed by the pitching and swapping of the mighty 490 and utilized a win or die trying approach to victory. Although a case could be made for the other riders in his class giving him a wide berth, Doubleday bolted into the lead from the start and, uncontested and without pressure, did manage to look smooth and in control, unlike the scene in his qualifier where he was attempting to come from behind when he crashed. Behind him though, the boy’s were heating up the ice as Alan Manka and Nik Pew battled for the second position. Pew held the point initially, but could not withstand the advances Manka and succumbed to the pressure on the second lap. Manka almost gave it back though as a bit too much speed while making the pass had him sliding to the outside on the edge of control. He was able to gather it back up and hold onto the position but the gap to Doubleday was now too large to overcome. Pew held on over Josh Bynes for the third position.
David Beck slid his KTM to the win in the 3rd Wheel Sr. class today, but not without a struggle. After pulling the hole shot, Beck overcooked the first turn and slid his way right back to fifth place. Not to be denied, Beck steadily took control of the race, passing his way back to the front via the outside line. It was his second win of the series and propelled him into the points lead ahead of Peter Perez, who finished third on the day.
Amateur Studded Quads saw Nick Lenon take his first win of the series, a much needed improvement over last weeks 10th place finish. Sam White continues to lead the points though, his second place finish today going nicely with his wins in the first two rounds.
As for the Bronco’s, well they went down swinging and the AFC Championship went to Pittsburgh. And those that stayed home-- well they just traded a great day of racing for a bad day of football, score seven points for the Roamers!
