Richards Rocks on Ice!
The Top Fuel Dragsters of off-road racing, otherwise known as the Speedway Class took to the ice first today and as he's done the previous three rounds, "Bouncin" Bob Richards rode to the front and the win. It was not without some drama though as Kelly Wright, suffering what appeared to be a carburetor malady held the line at the point of release. A quick adjustment and the class re-readied itself for launch. Michael Rohr nabbed the hole shot and jumped out to the early lead, but it was not to be for long as Richards, as he has done all season, held it on hard and railed the outside line to take the lead as they exited turn two. Seeing an opportunity, Wright also immediately pressured Rohr and was able to get under him heading into corner three. At this point, with clear ice ahead, Richards was on the gas and pulling away, eventually pulling a half lap gap on Wright for his fourth consecutive win of the season. Wright hung onto second, while John Baird managed to also work his way past Rohr for third.
Just like Richards domination of the speedway class, Davey Durelle owns the 301+ Pro Class. He proved it again today by launching to the lead right out of the gate and powering his way to his fourth consecutive win in this class. Jeff Steinberger kept the pressure on early, but Durelle, the master of the inside line was leaving no opportunity. Steve Brown, Kelly Larkin and John Baird were locked into a seesaw battle for the third position early until Brown and Baird tangled on the second lap, sending both riders sprawling across the ice and out of the race. This allowed Teague Sawyer the opportunity to pressure and overtake Larkin for third which he maintained to the finish. Durelle meanwhile, took advantage of the clear track ahead and smoothly extended his lead to about ten bike lengths over Steinberger at the finish.
They may not be the fastest bike out on the track, but if lots of passing action defines excitement, the 3rd Wheel Sr's are the class to watch. The bikes are a rather odd and eclectic collection of most anything resembling a dirt bike, old or new. Featuring a third wheel on the right side used as an outrigger, like a side hack but without the additional passenger, these studless units slither and slide around the track in an endless quest for traction and stability. Peter Perez took the measure of the pack today, putting his TT500 powered unit into the early lead by powering his way around Thomas Flint's early 70's XL Honda exiting turn two. The pressure on Flint continued as Al Nesshoefer and his BSA poked and prodded, forcing their way to the inside of Flint on the second lap to take the second position. Their battle allowed David Beck and his late model KTM four-stroke to also get around Flint and onto the wheel of Nesshoefer. From that point to the finish, Beck would continue to pressure Nesshoefer, going inside and out, but ultimately unable to make it stick and relegated to third on the day.
Larry Lehman skated his way to the Bare Tire B win today, but it was not without drama. Breaking away with the early lead, Lehman put a half dozen or so bike lengths between himself and the battle for second being waged by Adam Vlasicak and Dan Hoier. Exchanging the position numerous times, their battle brought them right onto the rear wheel of Lehman, who had put it into cruise mode, sure of the win at hand. Realizing the win was in jeopardy; Lehman turned it back up and smoothly regained the advantage and the win. Vlasicak led the see-saw battle for second at the finish line while Hoier finished on his wheel for third.
The Amateur Quad Studded class got off to an exciting start as Nick Lenon, jumping out to the early lead overshot turn two and spun out. Trying to avoid a head on collision, another unidentified rider rode straight out of the turn and into the snow bank lining the track. Quick attention by the medical crew had him up, but not in time or condition to make the restart. With the hole shot again going to Lenon, a more prudent use of the throttle had him through the first turn much more efficiently and in the lead. In firm control of second, Erik Laxson was not going to let this one be easy for Lenon and dogged him relentlessly for the lead until lap three. A little too much throttle into turn three sent Laxson wide and afforded the smooth riding Lenon some breathing room, about two seconds worth, that Laxson could not make up, relegating him to second. Dannan Wagner rode a smooth uneventful race to finish third on the day.
