Schmelzle Nimble at Kimball!

Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit
Round 3: Moto Adventure Qualifier
By George Pennington
Kimball, NE | May 14, 2006

Reigning RMEC Champion Ron Schmelzle took overall honors at Kimball!Mothers Day wasn't a deterrent for the nearly 200 riders who made their way to the plains of Nebraska for round three of the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuits Championship Series. In fact, promoter Bruce Dalton and his crew were a bit overwhelmed at the great turn-out for this first time event. Run in a qualifier, non-time keeping format, the Moto Adventure crew managed to squeeze a 14 mile course into a square mile of land plus some transfer trail from the camping area. But what a square it was! Two special tests per loop featured A and B riders riding separate, more challenging tests than the C's. The first special test featured an initial split at the start which sent the A's and B's through some tight canyons and washes, eventually funneling the courses together for all the riders after about mile to an awesome two mile grass track on the hilly plains. Long, fast straights combined with well laid out turns that allowed use of the natural banking and high traction content to maximize momentum and speed kept riders on the gas and grinning to the finish.

The second test featured some extremely tight natural canyons, tight enough in places to drag both footpegs on the walls simultaneously, forcing riders to lift their legs up over seat height to get through. As a grand finale, the A's and B's raced an extended special test over unfamiliar ground as they were sent out to ride both of the C tests along with the transfer section between for their final score.

Adding another overall win to his long list, Yamaha mounted Ron Schmelzle set the pace today and didn't relent, maximizing every second of the relatively short and few special tests. And good that he did, because not far off his pace was fellow AA rider Dave Neumeister who clocked his KTM in about 30 seconds behind for second overall on the day. Coming off a narrow overall win two weeks previous, Bernie Frederick rounded out the AA podium another 58 seconds back of Neumeister. At this early stage of the season it appears these three riders may be in an exciting three horse race for the championship this year.

Ian Blythe continued his winning ways in the 200A class. His overall time was not only good enough for the class win, but was strong enough to place him smack-dab into the middle of the AA's at sixth overall. RMEC veteran Scott Bright decided to challenge the kids today, riding a KTM 200 to second, nearly 3 ½ minutes behind Blythe. With 18 entries, the Vet B class was easily the largest of the day, and topping them all was Luke Rust. Rust didn't have it easy though as Adam Gilles kept the pressure on, giving up just a few seconds in each test to finish out second, just 57 seconds behind. Rounding out the top three was Brandon Jocelyn, another 57 seconds behind Gilles.

The closest racing of the day belonged to the 250C class; the top three finishers separated by only 27 seconds. Ken Comstock led the way, followed 10 seconds back by Weston Beard and another 17 seconds back to Blake Fastnacht.

Bernie Fredrick (12a) came in at third overall, while Scott Bright finished second 200A. Ian Blythe dominated the 200 A’s at Kimball RMEC Qualifier!

Matt Beardsley SMOKED the Open A’s!
