Wineland's Cup is Full!
Picture perfect conditions greeted competitors at the 27th annual Mosteller Cup. Held at the expansive Mosteller Ranch near Casper, the ranch features typical high desert mountain terrain and that big Wyoming sky. Initial impressions don't reveal all though, as a deceptively deep stream runs right through the trials area, offering lots of opportunity to get muddy and wet. Not a combination most western states trials riders are accustomed to. Adding a bit of endurance and mechanical reliability, the weekend event combines the scores over two days to determine the class winners.
One rider that needed no adjustment time is Pro class competitor Keith Wineland. Making the long trek from Southern Colorado, the nationally ranked number five rider was in town to keep his skills sharp in preparation for the upcoming Trials Des Nations of which he is a team member. Sharp he was as he blazed to a total score of just eight points dropped on the weekend. Derek Martinson kept it close on day one with a 12 point score, but was unable to finish day two and dropped to the bottom of the class. That left the door open for Miles Morgan, who finished second on the weekend with a score of 58 points. A far cry from Wineland's score, but an even greater distance from third place finisher Shad Peterson's score of 131.
Routing the Expert class, Kenny Mosteller finished up the weekend dropping only 13 points. Colorado rider Ben Wehling made his long trip payoff with a second on the day, narrowly edging out Randy Mosteller by a single point, 54 to 55. Another Colorado rider, Al Duke kept it close, guiding his Beta to a 69 point score for fourth today.
Russell Coates took top honors in the Advanced class. His low first day score of 25 being the clincher. Sarah Duke kept him honest on day one with a score of 34 that topped all the other men, but day two wasn't as kind for Duke as she faded back with a 60 point score that knocked her out of contention. Greg Howie, whose 44 point day one score left him near the back of the pack, picked things up considerably for day two. Dropping 32 points, Howie topped the day's standings and elevated his overall position to second on the weekend. Bryce Straka rounded out the top three with a score 80.
Novice class action saw local rider Cody Coates take the honors. Day one saw Coates drop only five points, besting runner-up Logan Cundy by four. Day two would bring a change though, as Tyler Pennington stepped up and challenged Coates matching his score for the day. Coates won out on tie-breakers, as well as the combined score for the overall, but Pennington's strong showing moved him up over Cundy in the final results to take second overall, with Cundy finishing third.
