Turkey Rock: Deines Is Finest!

Rocky Mountain Trials Association
Round 2: Turkey Rock
By George Pennington
Howard, CO | March 20, 2005

Crisp conditions were the order of the day as the RMTA competitors arrived in Howard Co. for round two of the championship series. Following on the heels of the technically challenging round one, trials masters Larry Lund and Ken White promised a more physically friendly loop and sections, which they delivered. Utilizing little used BLM land, allowed under permit only every other year, the loop and sections were a refreshing change of pace.

Expert class rider Steve Deines lit it up right from the start, completing the first loop with only nine points dropped. His nearest competitor, Mike Young, rode his Sherco to a 19 point score giving Deines a clear ten point lead. It was a lead he was going to need though, as Young, now familiar with the sections, turned on the magic and posted a seven to finish out loop two. Deines, struggling with his concentration took a big step backwards posting a 20 point score and allowing Young to enter the third loop with a three point advantage. Just when it seemed to be lights out, Deines recovered with a stunning, class low score of six on the third and final loop, topping Young’s score of ten to overcome the deficit and seize the class victory. Rob Weiher wrestled his suffering Gas Gas into third on the day, leaving a trail of fork oil in his wake.

Tracy Zentz topped the Sr. Amateurs today, posting the first RMTA class win for the new Montesa four-stroke, with a narrow single point victory over Tom Hedwall. The Gas Gas mounted Hedwall edging Zentz after the first loop four to five, Zentz followed up with a consistent five point score at the completion of the second loop. Hedwall dropped back, coming up with a seven and setting the stage for a third loop showdown that ended in a draw, both riders completing the third loop with a perfect score and allowing Zentz the win. Beta mounted Alan Duke topped Scorpa rider Mike Wehling for third, although Wehling had most of the ingredients for a win today. Dropping only three points in the final two loops, Wheling had given up 22 points in loop one and had himself in an impossible game of catch-up.

Overcoming a frustrating dry spell, Jarrod Tilton piloted his Montesa to the top of the intermediates today, but not without some stiff competition from Sarah Duke. The Gas Gas mounted Duke lead early, posting a four point score to the eight of Tilton. Tilton responded with only a single point dropped in loop two, while Duke punched out another four points narrowing the lead to only a single point heading into loop three. With the pressure on, both riders faltered slightly giving up more points than they had the previous loop. Tilton took the advantage though, dropping four points to the eight of Duke to secure his first win of the season.
